Metal British Army officer’s rank insignia pip, shaped as an eight-pointed star with a circular center bearing the Order of the Bath design. The inner circle contains three crowns surrounded by a laurel wreath and the Latin motto “Tria Juncta in Uno” (“Three joined in one”). The insignia is a gilt metal pin with a central post fastening on the reverse.
This insignia, commonly referred to as a “pip,” denotes officer rank within the British and Commonwealth armies, including the Canadian Army. The design derives from the badge of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, used since the 19th century.
The number of pips worn indicates rank:
-One pip: Second Lieutenant
-Two pips: Lieutenant
-Three pips: Captain
