Small pocket New Testament bound in pale blue cloth-covered boards, rounded corners. The front cover is stamped in dark blue with « NEW TESTAMENT, » the royal cypher GVIR (George VI) beneath a crown, and the Royal Canadian Air Force crest with motto « PER ARDUA AD ASTRA. »
The book was presented to Raymond S. Dickson by the British and Foreign Bible Society in Canada and Newfoundland, inscribed by chaplain E. Riggs of M.S.M.D. Lachine, with the verse « Be strong and of a good courage. » It includes a printed message from King George VI to the armed forces, dated September 15, 1939, commending the reading of the Bible to those « serving in my forces by sea, or land, or in the air » during wartime.
Testaments of this type were distributed widely to Canadian servicemen and women during the Second World War, often carried by military chaplains for presentation to enlisted personnel.
