Short, heavily worn stub of a rectangular graphite/wax marking crayon, black in colour with scattered red pigment residue embedded in the worn faces (possibly from a red crayon used alongside it, or a bicolor product). One face is embossed with a partially legible maker’s mark reading « …DIXON, » consistent with products of the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company. The stub is worn down to roughly half its original length through use, with rounded, faceted wear at both ends.
Marking crayons of this type were used for lumber, carpentry, or industrial marking — writing on rough or wet surfaces where a graphite pencil would fail.
