Galvanized sheet-metal coal scuttle of conical/wedge form with a diagonally ribbed (corrugated) body, a wide oval top opening, a spouted pouring lip at one side for directing coal into a stove or grate, and a large arched wire bail handle riveted to the rim. The metal shows extensive white/grey mineral encrustation and surface corrosion, with rust staining and a small hole or loss near the base.
A standard domestic coal scuttle of a type used through the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries for carrying coal from storage to a household stove or fireplace, prior to the widespread adoption of oil or electric heating.
