Mortar Shell

A British two-inch mortar shell, a small infantry support munition developed and issued to British and Commonwealth forces during the Second World War. The mortar shell consists of a dark green cylindrical body, a metal tail assembly with four fins, and a central vented shaft for propellant ignition.

This shell type was designed for use with the 2-inch mortar, a light and portable weapon system used for short-range fire support. Unlike larger mortars, the two-inch model had no forward bipod or complex baseplate system; instead, it relied on a simple spirit-level sighting system and hand-aimed operation by a two-man crew.
