Butter Churn

A four-imperial-gallon stoneware butter churn with accompanying wooden dasher. The churn is cylindrical with a rounded shoulder and straight sides, finished with a glazed cream-coloured exterior. Two wooden handles are affixed with metal rods for lifting. The top opening accommodates a wooden lid with a central hole through which the dasher’s handle fits.

The wooden dasher consists of a long handle attached to a circular paddle with cross braces, used to agitate cream by hand until it separates into butter and buttermilk.
