The trousers form part of a C.B. (Chemical and Biological) protective suit, designed to safeguard military personnel against airborne or contact-based toxic agents during Cold War–era NBC warfare scenarios. Made of treated fabric with a charcoal-impregnated inner layer, this type of protective clothing was standard NATO issue during the 1960s and 1970s.
