An oval-shaped metal field canteen, covered in brown wool felt with a screw-top metal neck and remnants of a blackened leather strap attachment on the front. The felt covering is secured with small rivets around the edges.
This design corresponds to the Model 1907 (M1907) canteen, introduced by the Imperial German Army prior to World War I and used throughout the conflict. It served as the forerunner to the later M31 model. The wool felt covering provided insulation and camouflage, while the strap system allowed the canteen to be worn on the soldier’s belt or suspended from a bread bag.
