Inside the jar are two metal paddles (agitators) fixed to a vertical spindle connected to the gear system.
The glass jar is slightly bulb-shaped, with molded horizontal ridges around the middle for grip. The churn is operated manually by turning the handle, which rotates the paddles to agitate cream until it separates into butter and buttermilk.
