Circular bronze campaign medal suspended from a rainbow-colored silk ribbon (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet) symbolizing the unity of the Allied nations. The obverse depicts the classical figure of Victory standing with outstretched wings, while the reverse bears the inscription THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914–1919.
This example is inscribed on the edge (not visible in photo) to 500047 Sgt J. Horan, CE Trg Depot, identifying it as awarded to Sergeant J. Horan of the Canadian Engineers Training Depot.
The Victory Medal was issued to all members of the Allied armed forces who served in a theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. It was always issued with the British War Medal, and recipients who had already received one were automatically entitled to the other.
