Mortar Shell

A badly corroded M2 60mm mortar shell, used extensively by U.S. infantry forces from the Second World War through the Vietnam War. The shell features a cylindrical body tapering to a rounded nose, with a four-fin tail assembly at the base designed to stabilize flight when fired.

This type of shell was fired from the U.S. M2 60mm mortar, a smoothbore, muzzle-loading weapon capable of firing high-explosive, smoke, or illumination rounds. It provided light infantry support at short to medium ranges and was valued for its mobility and versatility.

The artifact shows significant oxidation and deterioration, indicating prolonged exposure to elements, possibly recovered from a historical site or battlefield environment.
